Know Your ABCDE’S of Skin Melanoma?

Warning Signs: The ABCDEs of Melanoma Moles, brown spots and growths on the skin are usually harmless — but not always. Anyone who has more than 100 moles is at greater risk for melanoma. The first signs can appear in one or more atypical moles. That’s why it’s so important to get to know your skin very well and to recognize any changes in the moles on your body. Look for the ABCDE signs of melanoma, and if you see one or more, make an appointment with your physician immediately.

Propecia labels to list more side effects

The Food and Drug Administration broadened the cautions for Propecia, a treatment for male pattern baldness, and Proscar, used to treat symptoms of enlarged prostate and reduce the risk of urinary retention. In June 2011, the FDA revised the drug’s label to reflect possible increased risk of a serious type of prostate cancer. in 2012, the FDA is now adding new warnings about possible libido, ejaculation and orgasm disorders persisting even after patients stopped using the  drug as well as caution patients of the risk of male infertility and poor semen quality, which improved or normalized after patients ceased using the medication.

FDA Alert: Mercury In Skin Cream Products

Consumers should avoid OTC skin lighteners, “anti-aging” creams, acne treatments, and other cosmetics that may contain toxic levels of  Mercury according to an alert by the FDA issued on 3/15/2012.
Individuals who have already purchased products that might contain mercury should throw them away immediately, the FDA urged.  Ingredients include “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” “mercurio,” or “mercury” but may not be listed in English, or at all.  The alert came after the Minnesota Department of Health tested 27 products marketed as skin lighteners, finding that 11 exceeded the FDA’s allowable limit of 1 ppm of mercury compounds.  Several of these contained mercury at concentrations thousands of times higher.  Specific products identified by the FDA and the Minnesota health department as containing excessive mercury included creams and soaps with brand names such as Diana, Fasco, and Stillman’s, or were only in Chinese or Arabic scripts.  Skin products containing mercury have been found in at least seven states, including Texas.  Mercury exposure can damage the kidneys and the nervous system, and interfere with brain development in unborn children and very young children.  Since a person can get mercury in their bodies merely by breathing in mercury vapors emanating from users’ skin or touching people who have used the skin products, exposure can occur without personal usage of the products.

• To help you make the most of your dermatologist’s appointment, prepare yourself first.
  Before the Exam
  Remove nail polish ~ your doctor needs to look at your nails and nail beds, since skin cancers can form there.
  Perform a full-body skin self exam ~ make note of any new, changing, itching, or bleeding moles, growths, or other lesions.
  Remove all make up prior to your appointment & do not apply any lotions, chemicals, etc prior to your visit.
  At the Exam
  Ask the dermatologist to examine closely any moles, growths, or lesions.

Just Four Annual Tanning Booth Sessions Multiplies Skin Cancer Risks

New research indicates that people who tan indoors four times a year increase their risk of developing the non-melanoma skin cancers basal and squamous cell carcinoma by 15%, and their risk of melanoma by 11%.  Non-melanoma skin cancer can be disfiguring and sometimes life-threatening.  Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, will kill an estimated 8,790 people in the US this year alone.
Investigators led by Mingfeng Zhang, MD found that in addition to demonstrating a response effect (that is, the more extensive their indoor tanning, the higher their risk of developing skin cancer), the numbers suggest that younger tanners are especially at risk: “Tanning bed use during high school and college conferred a higher risk of basal cell carcinoma(BCC) than did tanning bed use between ages 25 and 35. In fact, just ONE indoor tanning session a year while the subjects were in high school and college boosted their risk of developing BCC by 10%, and those who tanned indoors more than six times a year had an 82% higher risk of developing BCC than non-tanners.  The authors presented their findings at a recent meeting of the Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

ACD Employee Spotlight-Vella Young

Eyelid Plaque May Signal Severe Atherosclerosis

A recent study has shown that plaques occurring around the eyelids (xanthelasma) may offer clinicians a new way of identifying patients at an increased risk for heart attacks, ischemic heart disease, and severe atherosclerosis, a study has shown (BMJ 2011; 343:d5497).
Patients with eyelid lesions should confirm whether these lesions are xanthelasmas.  If these lesions are present and diagnosed in a patient, a patient should be monitored closely by his/her PCP or cardiologist.

Contact Dermatitis Does Occur In Young Children

Rashes and skin irritations in small children may result from exposure to increasing numbers of  chemicals. Recent studies show that positive reaction occurred in 58% of girls and 68% of boys. Nickel sensitization can result from exposure to clothing fasteners, ear piercing, or cleansing products. Cocamidopropylbetaine sensitization may result from tear-free shampoos.  Neomycin sulfate sensitization may result from topical antibiotics, and MCI/MI sensitization may occur from use of wipes and moisturizers (Fortina A B.  American Academy of Dermatology Journal 2011 Oct; 65:772).
Children with rashes may need patch testing to determine what the trigger of the rash may be in order to avoid triggering the rash each time.

Severe Psoriasis Increases Risk For Cardiovascular Disease

Recent studies strongly suggest that psoriasis is linked to an increased risk for vascular diseases affecting the heart, central nervous system, and peripheral vascular system (Mehta NN  American Journal of Medicine 2011 Aug; 124:775. Untreated or severe psoriasis is hard not only on your skin & joints, but may also be hard on your heart.
One of the studies concluded that the presence of psoriasis, whether mild or severe, conferred increased risks for atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke and that these risks were significantly higher in patients with severe psoriasis (Ahlehoff O.  Psoraisis and risk of atrial fibrillation and ischaemic stroke:  A Danish Nationwide Chohort Study.  European Heart Journal 2011 Aug 12).
Since psoriasis is no longer considered “just a skin disease” but may involve inflammation in other organ systems, patients with psoriasis, especially those with severe psoriasis, should get treated.

Need Another Reason to Quit?

In a recent study, cigarette smoking was associated with non-melanoma skin cancer, with significantly increased risks associated with increasing dose (cigarettes per day), duration (number of years smoked) and pack-years smoked.  Cigarette smoking is more strongly associated with squamous cell carcinomas than with basal cell carcinomas, with an increased association in women.
